Shannon Gaels GAA
A native of Virginia, Co Cavan, Brendan O'Reilly is the the sixth of seven children
born to Patrick and Maureen O'Reilly, both gone to their eternal rewards.
Brendan received his early education at Virginia N.S. and Carmelite College, Moate, Co.
Westmeath. He graduated with a BA in Math and Irish and a H.Dip. in Ed. from NUI(Maynooth).
After a three year stint teaching secondary school in Dublin where his extra curricular responsibilities
were Gaelic games and athletics, he was granted a one year leave of absence to pursue a course in physical education
in New York. After nearly two years at Hunter, the ultimatum was issued by the Irish Dept. of Ed,
return to your post or resign! A big decision at the time but one he has never regretted.
He resigned that secure pensionable position.
Involvement in the GAA and other voluntary organizations is a rite of passage in his family. His father chaired
the Virginia Blues GFC and his brother John chaired the amalgamated parish club Ramor United GFC. Last week
at Aras an Uachtaráin his brother Ciaran was presented with the 2019 Presidential Distinguished Service Award
for the Irish Abroad in the Arts, Culture and Sport, a truly significant event in the Irish diaspora calendar.
Shortly after Brendan's official resignation from teaching he founded his painting company,
now over 35 years in business. The company has since developed into a general contracting firm.
Along the way he met his wife-to-be Sheila Rodgers from Kilkeel in Co Down. Nature took its course.......
love, marriage, kids..... two smashing young ladies, Eibhilin and Caitriona now in their teens. (Jesus!).
As Frank McCourt says in his book...... he is blessed among women!
On one of their earlier summer trips to Ireland the girls (were) signed up for Cul Camp. The camp coach
described Eibhilin as a ballerina in football boots with only some prospects of wearing the black and red uniform.
Caitriona on the other hand he reckoned would be well suited to the blue and white outfit
where excellence in the game is the norm.

Shannon Gaels GAA
On way to school one morning Caitriona announced she wanted to play Gaelic and that's where
the Shannon Gaels club entered our lives. By choosing Gaelic, Caitriona wanted,
among her other dreams, to be the only Gaelic player at her school. (Unfortunately), she held that record
through to her last day there. From her first practice secession at the Elks, Caitriona has been blessed
with dedicated and devoted coaches, Stephanie, Karen Kavanagh, Tom Quinn
and Conor Higgins. The O'Reilly family are most thankful to these individuals
for their commitment to the GAME and Caitriona's development as a young lady.
It is through his daughter's playing with Shannon Gaels that Brendan got involved with
the club organization. He has served two years on the executive board along with other committees.
Last year he was co-tour manager for the Feile girls trip to Ireland, a role that encompassed fundraising
and the general logistics involved in such a trip.
Like in any organization such as Shannon Gaels, Brendan believes that volunteerism
is an absolute necessity for both it's success and existence. A club house in Co Down
where Brendan visited lately posts on a billboard ...... Before you complain, have you volunteered yet?

Paidi Mathers - Minor Player of the Year 2019
Shannon Gaels GAA
Paidi was born and raised in Maspeth, New York within a family of ten: Collie, Stephanie,
Conor, Tiarnan, Caolain, Oisin, Aoife, Fiachra, and Tomas. Paidi has attended public schools
throughout his childhood including PS 58, IS 73, and Maspeth High School. Now he is attending
the New York Institute of Technology on the Manhattan campus.
Paidi was able to achieve success in Gaelic football due to the club. He was previously able to participate
in the Feile competitions in 2014 and 2015 alongside several other club players: Caolain M., Owen M., Aidan M., Christian D., Sean C., Sean O'C, and Robert C. under management of Collie Mathers.
In addition, he is currently part of New York's Development Squad; however, he believes in the saying,
"club over county", so the awards Paidi would like to focus on is with the club and future awards
he desires to win. Paidi has achieved a lot of success as a player of Shannon Gaels since first joining
and going to training in Sunnyside Gardens. He was apart of numerous Shannon Gaels trophies
in the regular seasons and the CYC annual competition. This year, as one of the minor team captains,
he was able to win the spring season final and the CYC competition.
He hopes to achieve future success in the under 21 and Junior B competitions.
Despite all the trophies and awards that come with Shannon Gaels, the privilege of being a part of a team
with his family is the greatest part of the club for Paidi. Paidi would like to thank Shannon Gaels
for giving him the ability to play alongside my family. He was able to participate in minor football
with Oisin; he was able to participate in under 21 with Caolain; he was able to participate in Junior B
with Conor and Tiarnan; he was able to referee Aoife, Fiachra, Tomas, and his mother;
however, most importantly he was mentored and instructed by his coach Collie Mathers.

Born to Anne Marie and Eamon (Duke) Devlin on September 19, 1999,
Patrick Devlin has one brother, Christian. He attended Saint Andrew Avellino Grammar School in Flushing and Xavier High School in New York City,
from which he graduated in May 2017. Patrick is currently in his third year
at the University of Delaware where he is studying engineering.
Patrick played a multitude of sports in his early years. Soccer and golf were his passions
preceded only by Gaelic Football, a sport he was able to explore in a more in-depth way
thanks to the programs offered by Shannon Gaels. Patrick's prior exposure to Gaelic
had been restricted to watching his cousin playing both locally and for their counties
and the limited time playing when in Ireland on holidays. Shannon Gaels enabled him
to compete and personally enjoy the physical and mental challenge
that is naturally inherent in the game.
Shannon Gaels Gaelic Football Club not only allowed Patrick to grow physically and mentally,
it afforded him the opportunity to develop friendships that have stood the test of time
both here and in Ireland. These relationships and life lessons he has learned on the pitch
have become part of Patrick's DNA and will influence him through life.

Conor Mathers, Junior Player of the Year
Shannon Gaels GAA
Son of Collie and Stephanie Mathers and the oldest of 8 children, Conor attended high school
at the Academy of American Studies and is currently in his 5th year
of a 5 year Architecture program at the New York Institute of Technology.
Conor was one of the first members of Shannon Gaels Football Club playing at all age levels
in both league and CYCs. Conor, along with Daniel Corridan, were the first players from the club to represent
Shannon Gaels at Feile Peil Na Nog. He has been selected for New York Premier CYC teams at the U-16 and U-18 age levels. He has played for the New York College team in Dublin, Cork, and Manchester. He has played in all New York Senior Divisions and is currently drafted to the St. Barnabas Senior team. He was the first Shannon Gaels player called up to the New York Senior panel, while his brother Tiarnan was the first from the club to play for the county team. Conor is the current New York Development team captain. Along with teammates; Daniel Corridan, Eamonn Doran, Tiarnan Mathers, Caolain Mathers, and father Collie Mathers as part of the management team, Conor won and captained New York at the World Games Native competition over the summer, his second World Games championship. Through the hard work and commitment put in by the Development team players and managers,
Conor has been called up to the New York Senior Panel with his brother Tiarnan.
Conor would like to thank his managers and teammates for this great honor. He would also like to thank his parents
for their commitment and passion to not only the sport but their children's success and love of the game,
the Development and World Games Management Team of Johnny McGeeny, Collie Mathers, Gerry Loane,
and Mickey Quigg for their commitment to furthering native born players, and Emer Mooney for constantly
looking out for and sponsoring the Junior B team. He is looking forward to many more successful years
with the club and building upon already strong friendships with his teammates.

Angela Sheridan - Special Hurling Award 2019
Shannon Gaels GAA
Angela Sheridan is a native of Granard in Co. Longford. Angela is one of 5 children; she attended St Mary's
N.S, Carra and Cnoc Mhuire secondary school in Granard. She graduated from Maynooth University with a BSc
and completed a post-graduate in Computer Science. Angela's husband is Thomas (Jerry) from Cornafean in Cavan.
Growing up, Gaelic football played a key role in life for Angela and Jerry.
Angela and Jerry lived for a number of years in Dublin and Ashbourne, Co. Meath. In February 1995,
They left Ireland to travel in the US for 5 years. Their first stop was Topeka in Kansas, followed by Dallas, Texas,
and finally New York in 1997. In January 1998, their first child, Leah was born and so ended the travel. Angela and Jerry have 4 children, Leah (21), Aaron (19), Emer (16) and Evan (12)
and they have made Middle Village, NY their home.
In the spring of 2015, Evan has invited by one of his friends to join a 'Bring your friend to Gaelic practice'
at Frank Golden field, he really enjoyed his day and signed up for Shannon Gaels the following season. Evan attended
his first CYC in Chicago in 2016, the hurling coach invited Evan to play
and gave him his first hurl, and Evan fast developed a passion for hurling.
Angela has worked for TIAA Financial Services since moving to New York. She has always helped out where possible
with her children's activities and Shannon Gaels was no different. Angela has been really impressed by the dedication
and fortitude of so many Shannon Gaels volunteers to provide a cost effective sporting community
that encompasses Irish culture. Angela is currently the SG Hurling secretary
and supports hurling coaches in communicating schedules and coordinating players
Angela and her family are very grateful to Shannon Gaels for welcoming them
into the Shannon Gaels family and look forward to continuing to support the journey to expand and advance the club.
