One wonders what Mrs. Bergman gave her sons for breakfast
in South Africa that they should both develop into committed
and caring leaders passionate about Judaism
and dedicated to supporting people in need.

The notes in the invitation to this dinner tell the facts
but do not mention that together with their wives
these two brothers are interesting and interested company
bringing honor to those who honor them today.

In recent years Harvey and I formed a close loving friendship
with Leslie and Dee in London and in Israel and Harvey
would have shepped nachus from this event as do I.

As the president of the liberal Jewish community Or Chadasch in Vienna, I am very pleased that our honorary president Leslie Bergman will jointly with his family receive the International Humanitarian Award of the WUPJ. I met Leslie for the first time in 1990 when he and his family moved from South Africa to Vienna for professional reasons.
He just arrived at the moment when our congregation was founded. Leslie immediately decided to support Or Chadasch and to take the position of vice president. It took a while for me to learn his prominent role for the worldwide movement of progressive Judaism, which he continued until today. It is fair to say that without Leslie's efforts, progressive Judaism might not exist in Vienna today. I also admire his charitable projects, including his support for Africa Tikkun and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Austria.
To our deep regret, Leslie and his family left Vienna after a decade for London. In the name of Or Chadasch, I want to thank my friend Leslie wholeheartedly for his long-lasting and loyal support for our congregation and progressive Judaism worldwide.
